Abstract

Cities from the List of Historical Settlements of Ukraine must be prioritized during post-war reconstruction, because architecture is a carrier of national identity which was deliberately destroyed by the aggressor. Special attention should be paid to the issues of restoration of the diversity of architectural images of historical cities and the modern use of their unique cultural landscapes, which play an important role in the formation of the spatial framework of the city by determining its vertical composition. Attention to landscape objects of cultural heritage is a manifestation of the modern integrated approach to the territorial preservation of the historical environment. The landscape as the primary basis for the historical territories’ development has not only historical, cultural and aesthetic value, but also embodies historical memory through numerous associative aspects. Results: To preserve the characteristic features of the urban landscape, the compositional, species and panoramic characteristics of the historical part of the city, a protected landscape zone is established. These territories can be adapted for recreation and relaxation of residents, provided that they are basically adapted for modern functions, which will not disturb the landscape. Determining the value of the region's identity is the basis for variable use of the natural landscape environment. Natural watersheds, which determine the development of a certain area, give a unique originality to ancient cities. Conclusions: Holding festivals and mass celebrations, which unite the residents, can become a modern filling of such social units. The simplicity of solving this function will allow to achieve the harmony of the natural landscape environment and architectural forms that seem to grow out of it.
