Enhancing Seventh Grade Students’ Speaking Skills through Project-Based Learning in an EFL Classroom
Abstract
This project presents a qualitative descriptive study that explores the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing the speaking skills of seventh-grade students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom at SMPN 5 Pamekasan, Madura, Indonesia. The study focuses on how Project-Based Learning is applied in classroom activities and how it influences students’ speaking performance, particularly in terms of confidence, participation, and fluency. Data were collected through classroom observations, field notes, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Project-Based Learning creates a supportive and engaging learning environment that encourages students to use English more actively during group discussions and oral presentations. Although grammatical accuracy remains limited, students demonstrate increased confidence and willingness to communicate in English. This project aims to contribute to research on Project-Based Learning and speaking skill development in junior high school EFL contexts, particularly in the Indonesian and Madurese educational settings.
