Mapping innovations in Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) and related scientific technologies for strategic advancement and scale-up
Abstract
The aim of this research project is to provide an overview of the existing evidence base, identify research gaps, and inform future research and policy priorities. Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine has long been a cornerstone of global healthcare, but its full contribution remains underrecognized due to a lack of consolidated, accessible evidence on innovations and their outcomes. Recognising this critical gap, the World Health Organisation (WHO) established the Global Traditional Medicine Centre (GTMC) in 2022 to advance TCIM through scientific research and innovation. This project focuses on identifying innovations in TCIM, which could be implemented by different countries worldwide. The map will systematically categorise innovations based on the type of knowledge-based products, such as digital tools, therapeutic protocols, or educational resources, and system enablers such as regulatory frameworks, financing models, or service delivery platforms, along with study design and geographic location. Synthesising the evidence across TCIM and innovations, the map will provide decision-makers, program implementers, and researchers with a strategic framework to prioritise investments, guide policy development, and scale effective solutions tailored to resource-constrained areas.
