Abstract

This study investigates the antitumor potential of red rosella extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa) against liver cancer, aiming to explore its efficacy as a natural therapeutic agent. Liver cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, necessitating the development of novel treatments with minimal side effects. Red rosella, known for its rich phytochemical composition including anthocyanins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, has demonstrated various pharmacological properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. In this research, in vitro and in vivo models of liver cancer were employed to evaluate the extract’s cytotoxicity, apoptosis induction, and tumor growth inhibition. The results revealed that red rosella extract significantly reduced cancer cell viability, promoted apoptotic pathways, and suppressed tumor progression without notable toxicity to normal cells. Mechanistic studies suggested that the extract modulates key molecular targets involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis, including upregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins and downregulation of oncogenic signaling pathways. These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of Hibiscus sabdariffa as a complementary or alternative treatment for liver cancer. Further clinical investigations are warranted to validate its safety and efficacy in human subjects. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of plant-derived compounds in cancer management and underscores the importance of natural products in drug discovery.
