Emerging Trends in Storytelling: Genre-Based Analysis of Narrative Visualization through Interactivity and Animation Effects-Design Space Analysis Of Narrative Visualizations(A summary version of the corpus metadata)
Abstract
To build our corpus, we first extensively collected narrative visualization examples from mainstream media (such as The New York Times' “Graphics” section, ABC News, and The Economist), visualization blogs and websites (such as The Pudding, Gapminder, and Tableau Public), and award-winning works (including Sigma Awards nominees and entries from the Sigma Awards—a prestigious prize in data journalism). The dataset was further supplemented by visual narratives hosted on platforms (e.g., National Geographic, Gapminder) and by data-driven videos on streaming platforms. We focused on works released within the past five years to ensure contemporary relevance and reflect the latest trends. Inclusion criteria required each case to possess: (1) A clear narrative structure (e.g., event chain, timeline framework), drawing on Weber's (Weber, 2025) four dimensions of narrativity: spatial and temporal dimensions, key characters and events, sequentiality, and narrativity; (2) At least one interactive or animated technique; (3) At least one visualization type (e.g., scroll-based narratives, annotated charts/maps). The feature matrix in Figure 1 employs a presence/absence binary mapping, where dark blue plus signs (+) indicate the feature's presence in a case, and light blue minus signs (-) denote its absence.
